Chartered in 1892, the Des Moines Consistory met in various Masonic buildings until housing with the Downtown Masonic Temple (now known as the Temple for Performing Arts) in 1913.

From that temporary location they began raising funds for their own location.

The building committee began with a trip to the St Louis Scottish Rite Cathedral.

The bronze doors on the south were cast by the same foundry as the St Louis building.

Auditorium seats 850; there is also a Banquet hall and Salon that will hold 250+.

The symbols and emblems of the Scottish Rite Masons have been incorporated in the decoration of the exterior and the interior.
