Principal Financial Group – Corporate Four
Keo Way and 7th Street
(Z-Bldg or K-Bldg)
Designed in 1992 by Helmut Jahn of Chicago
The exterior plaza was designed by Peter Walker & Partners of California.
The building shape responds to conflicting city grids that come together at the site.
The building includes a sculpture/water element designed by Maya Lin called “A Shift in the Stream”, a literally refers to the streams of water introduced into the building. Small, seemingly random streams of water are located on the 2nd and 3rd floors that flow to a trough at the base of a wall and reappear on the first floor in a horizontal stream.
The 4.4-acre outdoor plaza provides two distinct spaces: a shady reflective area on the east and a social area on the west.
A Mist fountain designed by Tom Mee of Cornell University has 223 nozzles, which atomize the water into mist and will automatically shut off if the wind is stronger than 7.5 mph.
