It is considered one of the most sympathetic additions done in the 1970’s in Iowa.
Instead of columns they employed three free-standing fin walls
The high vaulted lobby of the original Main Post Office was extensively restored in 1980 and is now the Polk County Heritage Gallery.
It is sheathed in matching limestone keeping the same height and scale of the original building with an abstracted version of the cornice around the new addition.
