Northwestern Hotel

321 Walnut Street

The first Northwestern hotel was a frame building built for Frank Starzinger c.1874

The current fireproof building was designed by Proudfoot and Bird in 1910-11.

NRHP 1984

Originally planned to be six stories as the east side’s third skyscraper

The finished building is only three stories with a high attic to elevate it a little more.

Each room features hot & cold water and a telephone; half of the rooms had baths.

On the backside of the building, an old marquee says this building is “Fireproof”; which was an important marketing tool at the time.

It is currently used as offices and retail.
