Norden Hall (Samuel Green Row House)
425 East Grand Ave
Built 1894 by Samuel Green (owned largest foundry in Des Moines)
Romanesque Rival style
The Row House was named a Local Landmark by the City of Des Moines in 2000.
Norden Hall became the home to various Scandinavian community groups; include the Norden Singing Society (Swedes), Danish Brotherhood, Danish Sisterhood and the Sons of Norway. Their presence called attention to the desire among immigrant groups to establish their own separate social and fraternal institutions.
Used as a single family home until 1900. Then rent out by the family as apartments/rooms until 1949. Used as Norden Hall till 1994 returned to single family home till 2006 at which time it was vacated.
In the spring of 2013 it was the last remaining row on the East Side and one of four left in Des Moines.
Moved to current locations from 709 East Locust Street on September 26, 2013
Renovations will cost approx. $1.2 million dollars and will house a restaurant. (Developer – Christensen Development Architect: Slingshot Architecture)
