Locust Tap Tavern (Carmichael Building)

432 – 434 East Locust Street

Constructed 1891-1893 for Wm Carmichael; who operated a notions store in 434 until 1907.

432 has leased to various stores or professionals.

Style: American Revival

Interesting detail is the use of rusticated brick on all pilasters. Period pressed tin ceilings still survive. The original areaways that allowed access to the basement retail space have been filled in but are still visible.

An original Victorian round turret was removed when the pedimented stone entry was added during the 1922 renovation for the East Side State Bank.

By 1923 the bank had closed and pharmacy occupied the store. After the repeal of Prohibition in 1933 the building began as a “package store” and the Locust Tap Tavern was opened by Clifford McDonald in 1937; longest continuously used tavern on the East Side. The bank vault survives and has been used as a beer cooler.
