The YMCA had two gyms with an elevated running track, a pool and handball courts as well as rooms for 165 men
In 1959 the Iowa Commission for the Blind purchased the building after the YMCA moved to its new building on the riverfront.
NRHP 2009 for Historic Social significant for Dr. Kenneth Jerganson’s efforts for civil rights for the Blind.
Comprehensive renovations by Design Alliance 1995-2010.
Materials are buff brick in a Flemish bond with terra cotta and mauve brick accents.
The main entrance has a soffited arched opening with carved rosettes.
The base is ashlar concrete blocks that has been painted.
