Insurance Exchange Building

501 5th Avenue

Built in 1923

Architect – Boyd and Moore, Des Moines – former associates of Proudfoot Bird Rawson.

Builder – Neumann Brothers

This late 19th century revival commercial building was commissioned by George Peak, founder of Central Life Assurance Society (1896)

Peak’s company was housed on the upper two floors and at least 10 other insurance companies were officed in this building.

The building was constructed under his direction, opening the year of his death.

Materials include brick and stone in this 10 story masonry load-bearing tower, which includes a rusticated base with window strips.

The plan is a very irregular ell in shape due to the off lot layout of the corner.

The lobby maintains the original condition – deco style.
