Elliott Hotel

219 – 4th street

In June 1901 plans for a 5 to 6 story hotel on west 4th Street where announced.

The local firm of Proudfoot & Bird where asked to provide sketches of the hotel but there is no record that their firm was employed to design the hotel.

By 1903 the Elliot Hotel was list it the city directory and in 1904 George Christian & Howard Hendrick where listed as the proprietors of the Elliot. The partners owned four hotels in Des Moines; the (second) Savery, the Elliot, the Alters and the Oxford and others in Cedar Rapids, Keokuk and Oskaloosa. The men where active in the insurance business, fraternal orders and politics.

The café for the Elliot was the Empire as discovered in the mosaic tile entrance during a recent remodel. By 1908 King-Ying-Low Des Moines’ oldest Chinese Restaurant opened and moved to the Elliot in 1949. In 2009 Full Court opened Fong’s Pizza in the same space keeping the Asian atmosphere.
