Designed as the Fire Department Headquarters in 1937

Streamline Modern style architectural influences are seen in the horizontal banding, curved pylons and main entrance

This form of architecture was influenced by industrial designs for ships, airplanes and automobiles

Public Works Administration project.

Note brick detailing  – “dogtooth” at top & stone pylons that separate the truck bays

Built on a landfill and has had problems with differential settlement

Voted 1 of 10 Best Buildings of Des Moines in 1939, by the City Council

The Des Moines Social Club bought the building and has plans to repurpose the 30,000-square-foot space into five classrooms, an art gallery, office space, bars, restaurant and a retail area. Opening end of 2013. (MALO a 6,500 sf Tex-Mex – Latino Restaurant)
