Four primary units built 1908 though 1970.

Mattes family founded DMBC; German immigrants used familiar style, the Germanic “Burg” -fortress

Corked lined walls in the brew cellar

Used Bohemian hops and Iowa-grown barley to make “Old Tavern Beer”- the “Cleanest, Purest and Best brewed beer on the Market.”- closed nine years later during local prohibition –

Green Foundry moved into the building in 1919; added more buildings and became a state leader in manufacturing furnaces. The Foundry closed in 1949.
