Proudfoot, Bird & Rawson designed this modified Chicago-style building, constructed in 1912. It was East Des Moines’ second (and last) skyscraper and was ornamented with terra cotta lions’ heads . It was built for Horace E. Teachout, a Des Moines entrepreneur and politician who built the first electric trolley line and owned Capitol City Ice Co. Teachout was also a Polk County Supervisor, a State Representative, the Chair of the Parks and Recreation Board and and an officer for the Drake Relays.
The building was restored in 1999 by Herbert Lewis Kruse Blunck. Traces of the original office arrangement were left as a part of the restoration and great lengths were taken to restore original architectural details. It was listed on the National Register in 1999, and notable as it was one of the first buildings to be restored in what is now called The East Village.
