In 1869 local architect William Foster designed this building for the state’s first successful casualty insurance company. He located his office here as well. The building received its first renovation in 1885 by Proudfoot, Bird & Rawson. In 1913 it was converted to the Hawkeye Hotel. The 1985 renovation into mixed use removed all the “improvements,” and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
