This 1937 Streamline Moderne fire station designed was by Proudfoot & Rawson as a WPA project. The Moderne style is reflected in the horizontal banding and the curved pylons at the entry. It was voted one of the 10 Best Buildings in Des Moines in 1939 by the City Council. In 2014, Slingshot Architecture created an award-winning historic re-use project, the Des Moines Social Club, with restaurant, coffee shop, gallery, outdoor courtyard, and community meeting and classrooms. The project included renovation of the former, adjacent Des Moines Fire Station Maintenance Garage, which contained the main theater space, bar, and rooftop lounge. The DMSC closed in 2019.
