This building was designed by HLKB Architects in 1999, as a way to pull 1,851 automobiles and parking spaces out of the central business district of Des Moines.  Meant to be a “machine for servicing the downtown community”, the concrete facility included a day-care center for 100 children, and a metro bus station. Glass and steel elevator and stair towers provide unique views to the city, humanizing the large scale of the garage. It won AIA honors at the state, regional and national levels as well as a merit award from the US Dept. of Transportation.
