Designed by Brooks Borg Skiles Architecture-Engineering with Seattle architect Loschky Marguardt & Nesholm, the building was constructed in 1986 and used as the Polk County Convention Center until it became the downtown Wellmark YMCA. It’s unusual site boundary is produced by the intersecting street grids in the area. The building won an AIA Iowa Honor Award and was voted one of the ten best buildings of the decade.
