HL Stevens Company of Chicago designed the Hotel Randolph in 1912.  Its developer was Judge James Hewett, who named it for his eldest son.   It was listed in 2009 on the National Register of Historic Places because of its pioneering use of structural concrete design. The co-mingling of steel and concrete was the safest bet against fire. Originally built in the Renaissance Commercial style, its street level facade was updated to an Art Deco style around 1935.
