The library forms an integral part of the new Des Moines Western Gateway Park and aims to serve the technology needs of 21st century library users. It was designed by London architect, David Chipperfield, in collaboration with local architects HLKB. At the east end of the park, it provides a link to downtown while connecting with the surrounding landscape. It is designed to create outside spaces and convey to patrons a sense of sitting in the park while reading a book. Shelving is arranged in a way that visitors are always facing the park, giving a sense of transparency. The sedum roof improves the environmental impact of the building. The concrete structure is wrapped in a composite glass-metal skin, incorporating a sheet of expanded copper mesh between the outer panes. In 2006, it won an AIA Central States Region Award.
